And now I am starting to think the unthinkable: that the time may be approaching for the great John Simon, now in his late seventies, to retire. When Larry Gelbart's immortal masterpiece opened in '76 he gave it a scathing review in
The New Leader -- with George C. Scott. Now he calls it funny (sort of). Have the intervening years made the work better -- or merely drained Mr. Simon's bile? It is bad enough when a conventional ad-blurbist deposits his adjectives on the printed page; it is another thing with Mr. Simon, who has written some of the most trenchant theater and film reviews, but seems seldom to do so now.
