ANNOYING: Amity Shlaes, who used to work for THE WALL STREET JOURNALS CONSERVATIVE EDITION or some such true-believing outpost, lashes at Massachusetts, er, NEW YORK would-be governor Bill Weld for proposing state income tax cuts for "the middle class." The problem -- and it's ALWAYS the problem with a certain con-SER-va-tive -- is that YOU-KNOW-WHO would pay more. She proposes a flat income tax, or no tax. We can see the virtue in that; but the problem is, when a con-SER-va-tive proposes these things we must always look with suspicion, as when con-SER-va-tives propose lower taxes for "the middle" they're usually not doing it to flatter the middle -- and most of those proposing tax cuts are NOT in the middle anymore. We doubt Amity's seen it in YEARS.
She also says it would increase the state's deficits. Since when has THAT been a problem?
