A eulogy for the boxing rogue Don King -- and for our culture:
Too much competition makes it harder than ever to create a new superstar. Last night I looked with disgust (and a little jealousy) at the top Branson East grosses, nearly every attraction a sellout, and I thought, how could such junk make so much money? In Branson East there is no competition; each free standing theme park draws its faithful. Other entertainment endeavors aren't so lucky; you can't tell one property from the next because, as in boxing, so many mediocrities compete -- and as boxing has seven heavyweight titles, show-biz has awards. It's not just sport with a problem, and it's not just mediocrity's profusion that makes this such a dreadful age for sport and for culture.
