Brooklyn's employment rolls swelled by 1.4% in the first quarter of 2010, compared to the year earlier period, marking the fourth largest gain in the nation, a new report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics finds.

The 8,600-job spurt was fueled largely by a hiring spree in home health care, which added 4,500 jobs during the quarter.

“It's nice that there's job growth, but most of the growth is concentrated in an industry that is not particularly high paying,” said Martin Kohli, a BLS regional economist.

Indeed, the average weekly wage in Brooklyn declined despite the job growth, falling by 1% to $718. The average weekly wage for home health aides is only $541.
