When a movee ad-blurbist calls a masterwork "painfully funny" we know the accent is on pain.
The other day, a colleague of mine called the Coen brothers “Stanley Kubrick’s grandchildren,’’ and he didn’t mean it as a compliment. He was referencing the cold, almost inhuman brilliance the filmmakers share; the cynicism that allows no emotion beyond the unforgiving laugh. (FIRST TWO SENTENCES) We've said it before, we say it again -- news hacks stumble on the truth. And THEN they let it get away from them, being so incurious to follow through on it.
