In what is less a tribute to a "pioneering" show-biz flack than another lengthy self-serving jaysonist mea culpa, the
LALA Times admits
the weekend box-office lies, er, grosses have become pure PR (not that that would stop the
LALA Times, of course -- if it stopped running PR it would stop covering show-biz), and more to the point,
that the news hacks' obsession with these numbers helped cause the explosion in el-stinko movies, and that the veritable inventor of gross BO reporting, a
Variety hack named Art Murphy, was not pleased.
Sorry that so many of my posts are inspired by LALATimes.com, but on a daily basis it runs more risible stuff than any other newspaper-based Web site, NYTimes.com and SFGate excepted.
