Jonathan Yardley pans a new bio of Ted Williams in part for sentences like
this:
"The landscape of the past lies somewhere under the landscape of the present. That is a fact. An erector [SIC]
set of change might have been constructed to obscure the gridwork of memory . . . but the past is still down there at the bottom, blahblahblah...."
What Mr. Yardley must realize is that
the author is "a senior writer for
Sports Illustrated" and "served for twenty-one years as a sports columnist for
The Boston Globe." People win P-ULITZERS for such prose.
