I must confess I'm up this morning just to make sure our local ill-begotten transit authority is shut down today. Both sides wanted this strike: the transit union because it didn't want to give up its health benefits, their bosses because they didn't want to pay them. Now they're fighting with "statements" and the equivalent of expelling gas loudly in close quarters. Forgive me for saying both sides deserve to go to hell. I'm sure traffic will be horrendous today, but after the first few days things will sort themselves out, and by the time they settle this thing (in two months) the transit authority will be much poorer in its revenue stream, and the workers will have to give up some of their benefits anyway, and both sides will have earned not undying enmity from the public, but something worse -- indifference.
