With the tragic tale of Bernard Madoff it is too easy to ask how far the rot extends. Perhaps rot was built in to the system. Perhaps any system of financial one-upmanship must have criminal activity built into it. We do know ten years ago this scum was another of the endless heroes boosting America into permanent prosperity. It doesn't seem so funny now.

It is, of course, possible that this scum didn't do the $50 billion in damage he claimed, wanting to make a big thing about himself to the end. Whether it's $50 million or $50 billion it's always the same old crime; only the amounts have changed.
